About this work:This is a painting of Cinnyrus orsea, the Palestinian songbird considered the national bird of Palestine. This image shows the male bird in song with his iridescent plumage and the female is extracting nectar from Anchusa strigosa, also known as prickly alkanet - a herbaceous plant from the Boraginaceae/borage family. This is an important medicinal plant found commonly throughout the Mediterranean. All parts of the plant are ‘demulcent’ (relieving irritation and inflammation) and ‘expectorant’ (aids in loosening mucus). It is used for a variety of topical and internal applications.
