Night visitors depicts the little researched phenomenon of moth pollination of the kohekohe tree. It’s pale but strongly perfumed flowers attract night visitation by various native moth species. Due to the seasonality of flowering and the fact that this activity is nocturnal few have been witness to this. The moth species illustrated here were recorded visiting kohekohe flowers late at night by photographer Olivier Ball while producing imagery for Photographic Guide to Moths & Butterflies of New Zealand by Robert Hoare, invertebrate systematist for Manaaki Whenua, Landcare Research.

This work was originally produced in 2019 for the New Zealand Botanical Art Society exhibition held at the Auckland Botanical Gardens and is now housed in a private collection in Kaikohe.
