Kakī, black stilt (Himantopus novaezelandiae)

from NZ$169.50

The kakī is the world’s rarest wading bird, it’s population reaching an all time low of 23 in 1981. Once common in different parts of the country it is now only found in the Mackenzie Basin of South Canterbury and North Otago. A captive breeding programme has helped to increase the number of birds and ensure their survival. It is a taonga – a living treasure.
