Pepeketua, Native Frogs of Aotearoa
Pepeketua, Native Frogs of Aotearoa
Frogs are so beautiful! The three native species from the Leiopelma genus are illustrated showing the unique appearances of each species. L. pakeka, the former Maud Island Frog was recently integrated with L. hamiltoni. A slight visual difference is shown which lead scientists to believe they were different species.
A lot of visual differentiation (colour and patterns) occurs between individuals of each species especially in the Archey’s frogs. Infact NZ scientists have developed a special system for photographing individual markings on each frog being monitored. This particular frog species is the. worlds most rare and most evolutionary unique.
Additional illustrations show the Archey's frog at life size scale and behavioral characteristics of native species in which adult frogs mind their eggs and when they hatch, transport and their froglets on their backs!
