Pūrerehua - Butterflies

This open edition poster features illustrations of 29 plant/butterfly or caterpillar species native to Aotearoa, New Zealand. Central in the design is the endangered pēpepe pouri, forest ringlet or Helms’ butterfly (Dodonidia helmsii). *One of the many scientific reasons Aotearoa, New Zealand is a special place is it’s biological diversity (the variety and variability of lifeforms and ecosystems), the high rate of endemic plants and animals (not found anywhere else on earth) and distinctive evolutionary characteristics (resulting from hundreds of years of geographical isolation). Diversity is mother natures insurance policy against disaster and although as human we may not understand the immediate value of each species or ecosystem, we can trust each has its own intrinsic value as a significant link in the web of life. With this understanding (and knowing the majority of the land here has been modified since human arrival) it is of great significance for all people visiting, living in or of this place to protect and restore native ecosystems, plant and animal life. This may begin by seeing the beauty in the small things…
