Archey's frog (Leiopelma archeyi) with froglets :D

from NZ$45.00

Native pepeketua - frogs are small (<5cm) and nocturnal. They are so considered ‘living fossils’ having evolved very little over 150,000,000 years.

Of the native species the Archey’s frog pictured here is the most at risk and is NUMBER ONE on the list of Evolutionary Distinct & Globally Endangered (EDGE) amphibian species as it is so unique and so at risk :(

Some interesting evolutionary traits in their physical and behavioral characteristics which make all pepeketua of importance (aside from the fact that they’re awesome) is that they are nocturnal, they do not croak (if you hear a frog in Aotearoa it is likely to be a species from Australia), their pupils are round not slit and they have no outer eardrum.

Not only that but they have no tadpole stage, instead hatching as froglets, which ride on the back of the male of the species until they develop!
