Pukupuku, Little Spotted Kiwi (Apteryx owenii). The smallest of the five kiwi species. Although the population of these kiwi is increasing fewer than 6000 individuals remain.Most of the remaining birds live only on intensely mamaged predator free islands but a small group was recently introduced to Nelson. Painted in 2021 for the permanent exhibit ‘Birds of Tiritiri Matangi’ at the Auckland Museum.
