Manumea, Tooth-billed Pigeon (Didunculus strigirostris)
Manumea, Tooth-billed Pigeon (Didunculus strigirostris)
Manumea aka the little dodo or the tooth billed pigeon (Didunculus strigirostris) is supposedly a secretive animal, a beautiful loner thought to be hiding out in remote old growth forests on the islands of Upolu, Nu’ulua and Savai’i of Samoa where it is endemic and also the national bird. So secretive is their behaviour that no documentation of their nests or breeding habits exists. Their unusual ‘toothed’ bills are thought to help open the tough fruit of trees in the Mahogany family Meliaceae and they’re used to scoop up water- another uncommon behaviour.
Manumea are one of the closest living relatives of the dodo from the pigeon and dove family Columbidae.
An estimate of 150 individuals in the wild is perhaps hopeful but preservation of habitat for this charismatic species also allows for the immeasurable benefit of the survival of the forests themselves
