Forest for the Trees, Plaything Gallery 2009

Forest for the Trees was the inaugural exhibition at Auckland's former Plaything Gallery, featuring a series of water colour illustrations and intricately detailed large scale ink drawings.

Once there was and once there was not a community of socially estranged characters dwelling in the depth of a never-ending forest. Hermits of human, furred, winged and multi-breasted varieties struggle to communicate from their neurotic isolation. Their gestures were or were not merely actions; but symbols of a frustration terminal to relationships.

This struggling woodland ‘society’, their dwelling and the works they embody personify a parallel that exists not only in social but in global situations; where each work, each character, each mark is sympathetic to the concept that all parts equal the whole.
